Sun 8th March 2015, Newton Le Willows Aces v Garswood Hawks

Garswood made the short trip to local rivals Newton for a mid morning test in cold and wet conditions despite the weather cracking the flags the day before.

An entertaining affair had taken place a few weeks earlier between these two rivals and the visitors knew that they would need to be at their best to come away with maximum points.

The message was to attack from the off and Garswood came forward at every opportunity with Ryan Eden and Alexi Mellor looking dangerous early on. Fifteen minutes in the deadlock was broken when Captain Brad Wilson thumped in a tremendous header as he climbed highest to meet Ryan Eden’s corner with some aplomb.

Brad then doubled his tally when firing home through a crowded box after another fine delivery into the mix was only half cleared and he made no mistake with the finish.

The visitors were firing on all cylinders at this point and Ryan again caused havoc in the Newton defence when he beat three defenders out on the left wing before cutting in from the by line and was clipped from behind.

Ollie Kennedy stepped up and hit a fine spot kick only for the home keeper to produce a great save low down to his right. Ollie didn’t have to wait long to make amends as moments later he made a late run from midfield to dispatch Jay Herrings clever cut back with a sliding finish directing the ball into the top corner to put the visitors 0-3 up at the interval.

Four changes were made at half time and Garswood started the second half as they had ended the first by taking the game to their opponents. Brad almost got his hat-trick after heading just wide from another superb Ryan Eden corner and Aaron Bevan, Owen Roberts and Matty Marsh all went close to extending the lead. Newton kept plugging away and had a couple of half chances but the defence, marshalled by keeper Dan Finney looked solid and assured throughout.

The icing on the cake came with five minutes left when Cameron Ashurst sent a fantastic diagonal ball out to Liam Hilton who ran 40 yards beating two defenders and got to the by line before cutting back to the edge of the box where Ethan Apter took a touch before drilling home a superb finish into the bottom left hand corner.

A great result for the lads which keeps them at the summit of Division 3, we have had some great battles with Newton over the years and you never get easy points here, the way every one of the squad dug in and battled gives us great heart for the remaining three matches left.

Sun 1st March – Garswood Hawks 1 v Appleton 1

A hard earned point against one of our closest rivals at the top of Division 3, a fair point in the end for both sides in an entertaining match in which Alexi Mellor continued his scoring run before Appleton equalised midway through the second half.
