Sun 26th April 2015, Garswood Hawks v Winwick Athletic

Winwick were the visitors for the penultimate league fixture and last home game of the season and Garswood were looking to add to their strong form at home having only lost one game all season at Birch Grove.

The hosts started brightly with Cam Davies, Ryan Eden and Alexi Mellor all looking dangerous down the left with some smart interplay. One of these sorties led to Alexi feeding Ryan who jinked across the box on a mazy run before captain Ollie Kennedy thumped a side-footer from 20 yards which took a slight deflection and flew past the away keeper. Despite wave after wave of attacks the home side could not add to their lead as a combination of some wayward finishing and brave goalkeeping kept them temporarily at bay.

Wholesale changes were made at the interval and Garswood continued to attack at every opportunity and didn’t have to wait long to double their advantage. Alexi played Josh Aubrey Williams in down the right channel and a lovely floated cross was met at the far post with a thumping header from Ryan Eden which the keeper couldn’t hold and Aaron Beavan gleefully tapped home from 5 yards out. Jack Perrett then got his name on the score-sheet with a speculative punt from 70 yards out which caught in the wind and bounced over the despairing keeper, surely a contender for goal of the season!  Some slack marking from a corner gave the visitors a “gift wrapped” goal which was nodded home from 5 yards to give them a glimmer of hope but the best was saved to last with ten minutes remaining.

A short corner was played between the impressive Cam Davies and Ryan Eden which gave the latter a chance to whip in a dangerous cross which was met at pace by Jack Perret who glanced a fine header into the far corner to double his tally for the day and put the result beyond any doubt for the hosts.

Man of the Match – Just shaded by Ollie Kennedy who led by example as captain. Strong in the tackle, a great talker on the pitch and bossed the midfield, capping off a fine performance with a great finish to break the deadlock in the 1st half.

Sun 19th April – Culcheth v Garswood Hawks

Garswood travelled to Culcheth looking to consolidate their place at the top of the league for an early morning kick off.

Both sides had chances but the visitors shaded possession in the first ten minutes and were rewarded when Alexi Mellor slotted home with a fine finish to put them 0-1 up.

Garswood then inexplicably took their foot off the gas and some complacent defending led to two quick-fire chances which were taken by the hosts to give Culcheth a 2-1 lead at the break.

Five substitutes were introduced at the break and the visitors looked to get a foothold back in the game. The woodwork was rattled twice and only the referees whistle prevented an equaliser from Aaron Beavan due to a border line offside decision. Aaron had the last laugh though as he tapped in the equaliser from a few yards out after a corner from Ryan Eden was only half cleared. Jay Herring had a couple of late chances to gain all 3 points when firstly through one on one with the keeper before slotting wide and then curling a stunning left foot strike from the edge of the box which was tipped over the bar. In the end a draw was a fair result for both teams, the visitors looked rusty in patches but this was to be expected as the recent weather had put a stop to any matches being played for a month or so.
